Lucky Numbers: EWC GP of Romania
The Enduro World Championship heads to eastern Europe this weekend. Let’s look at the figures…
This weekend sees the Enduro World Championship roll into the quiet Romanian town of Buzau for round five of the series. With everything still to play for, we crunch the numbers ahead of the GP of Romania…
208 – The distance in kilometres that competitors will cover during each day of the race. With event organisers setting out a fifty-two kilometre course, which gets ridden four times each day, the world’s best enduro riders are set for one tough weekend in the saddle.
2 – The number of British riders that currently lead a class in the EWC. The Husaberg pairing of Jamie McCanney and Jane Daniels head the championship standings in their 125 Youth Cup and Women’s classes respectively. While McCanney has a pretty solid 44-point lead things are much tighter for Daniels. With just a two-point advantage over defending champion Laia Sanz, Daniels faces a tough fight on her hands to hold Sanz at bay in Romania, which also marks the penultimate round in the Women’s championship.
304 – The distance in kilometres from Buzau to Sibiu – home of the Red Bull Romaniacs. Taking place from July 2nd – July 6th, the 2013 edition will mark the tenth anniversary of Romania’s toughest Hard Enduro event.
34 – Four rounds in to the 2013 season and KTM team-mates Antoine Meo and Christophe Nambotin coincidentally both enjoy a thirty-four-point lead in their respective Enduro 1 and Enduro 3 classes. But it’s Meo who maintains the upper hand over his fellow countryman with seven wins to Nambotin’s six.
2011 – Was the first and last time the Enduro World Championship was held in Romania. Despite a highly popular Hard Enduro scene – led by the Red Bull Romaniacs – Romania has a very short history when it comes to EWC events. But with the 2013 race coming just two years after the championship’s first visit in 2011, that trend looks set to change.
100 – Based on his 100% dominance of the Enduro 3 class on day two at the GP of Portugal, Christophe Nambotin is back to his very best. Nambotin also unofficially topped the overall classification.
109,000 – Home to 109,000 inhabitants, the medium sized town of Buzau will play host to round five of the EWC. Situated along the banks of the Buzau River, which gave the town it’s name, Buzau – Romania’s eighteenth largest town – was formally a monastic settlement and is famous for it’s wineries.
86 – With only eighty-six days separating day one in Romania and the final day of the season in France, the fifth round of the series is a crucial one for all involved. For those intent on becoming championship contenders, Buzau is their time to shine
